Nothing beats going to the theater and watching a movie on the big screen. Except maybe the ticket prices, spending twenty bucks on popcorn and soda, and the screaming kids and teenagers at the show.
Okay, maybe the theater has its downsides. Thankfully, home projector technology has improved so that you can deliver the theater experience in your home, where popcorn is cheap and no one is ruining the movie for you.
But which projector to get? There are so many to pick from, and each seems to have their own pros and cons. That’s why we’re here to help. We’re comparing some of the highest rated projectors out there to give you the best experience, and today we’ll be looking at the Epson 5030UB and the Epson 3020. Which is the better value? Let’s find out.
The Price
First, let’s compare the prices by seeing how much they’re going for on their respective Amazon page for a new unit. As of this article, the 5030UB sells for about $1,990, while the 3020 goes for about $1339.
So these projectors are a bit higher end, and the price difference is noticeable. Does the cost reflect the quality, though?
The Picture
You can’t go wrong with the 5030UB. The unit has full 1080p support, as well as 3D viewing. At 2,400 lumens, the projector shines brightly, and guarantees a picture that’s anything but dim. And it boasts a contrast ratio of 600,000:1, making the picture so lifelike that you’ll be sucked in no matter what.
Meanwhile, the 3020 unit has the same basic features. 1080p, 3D support, and about the same lumen count at 2,300. However, the contrast ratio is noticeably smaller. It’s only 40,000:1.
The contrast ratio for the 3020 is noticeably inferior, and it’s quite low for the price. You can find units for half that amount that have the same ratio. But maybe the 3020 will have some extra features that make the price tag worth it.
Other Features
Both units have similar essentials. 3D glasses are included with each one, and they both have an eco mode, which conserves power for the projector when it’s not in use. There’s also built in speakers for both units, but they’re always underpowered, and you should invest in external speakers if you want to have a true movie going experience.
The 3020 does include something known as Split Screen mode, which allows you to project from two different sources. This is quite a neat feature, giving the 3020 some advantage.

Although the Split Screen mode is cool, we can’t ignore its contrast ratio and high price tag for what it delivers. We have to go with the 5030UB. The contrast ratio is incredible, and it’s not tremendously expensive from the 3020. If you’re looking for the best quality experience, you have to go with the 5030UB.
Here’s hoping this article gave you a more informed decision. Happy shopping!
