What started as a Boy Scout project at the age of 14 has become one of the top leading backpack creators in the market. From its very beginning and through research, feedback, and experimentation Gregory Mountain Products have become synonymous with quality, innovative design, and comfort in the backpacking world.
The following two backpacks offered by Gregory Mountain Products are no exception.
The Gregory Baltoro 75 Features
Organization
This award winning backpack boasts of highly organized pockets, easy access points and comfort.
Items stored in this backpack are easily organized using eight small pockets and one very large main compartment. Small pockets are staggered throughout the backpack; under the front lid, on the hip-belt and other locations.
Items stored in the main compartment can be easily reached through the thoughtful design of three access points. Rather than rummage through the entire backpack to find an item at the bottom, simply open the bottom access zipper. Have something stored in the center- open the front access zipper. The top, front, and bottom zippers help keep your backpack organized and accessible.
Two water bottle side pockets are included in addition to a hydration pack reservoir sleeve and two drink tube exit ports. The hydration pack itself must be purchased separately.
Comfort
Much thought and design has been applied to make this backpack durable and comfortable. Gregory backpacks are best known for their advanced suspension systems. Named after the founder of the company, the Gregory Response AFS Suspension System has many features.
The first feature is a rotating, independent waist belt system. Its rotations help the backpack conform to changes in hip angle as well as mirror your movements. This helps reduce chafing and fatigue.
Secondly, the system helps distribute the weight evenly, allowing you to carry heavier loads with less effort, and stress on hips and shoulders.
A Thermo-molded EVA back panel with a “grippy lumbar pad” also ensures your backpack stays in place throughout your hike.
Specifications
The Gregory Baltoro 75 is made of 210-denier double-diamond rip-stop and 210-420 denier flat-weave fabrics. These fabrics are covered against tear with a lifetime warranty. There are four possible colors to choose from.
The frame type is internal. Available in three sizes to accommodate different heights, torso lengths, and needed weight capacity.
In the smallest size the gear capacity is 4,455 cubic inches while in the largest it is 4,760 cubic inches. In the largest size, the backpack weighs around six pounds.
The Gregory Palisade 80 Features
Organization
Like the Gregory Baltaro75, the Palisade 80 offers the same large main compartment, front pocket, fanny back conversion, belt, water bottle holders and hydration pocket. It also offers the same top, front, and bottom access as well as water and wear resistant bottom.
Comfort
The Gregory Palisade 80 backpack is also equipped with a suspension system. In this case however, it is called the Gregory Response CFS Suspension system, rather than the AFS found in the Gregory 75. This CFS includes an easy adjust five-point angle waist belt and very cushioned 3D harness.
By adjusting to different hip belt angles, the waist belt eliminates stress on the back and hips as well the hot spots contact areas.
The Gregory CFS Suspension system also ensures that the backpack will not cave under heavy weight. It does so by employing two aluminum stays supported, in turn, by a horizontal anti-barreling cross stay.
Unlike the Gregory 75, which is made of denier material, the Palisade 80 is made of a combination of 210 HT double diamond rip-stop materials and broken twill nylon fabrics.
Primary Differences
The primary differences between the Gregory Baltoro 75 and the Palisade 80 are in the suspension systems and in the weight capacities.
In the largest size, the Gregory Baltoro 75 had a weight capacity of 4,760 cubic inches while the Palisade has 5,370 cubic inches.
The suspension system on the Palisade is also slightly different to accommodate the larger size and weight capacity. This suspension system includes more features such as anti-barreling protection.
Apart from these two primary differences, the backpacks are very similar in terms of organization and comfort.
Conclusion
The Palisade 80 offers much more storage capacity and an advanced suspension system designed for extreme loads and is ideal for hardcore backpacking exploration. The Gregory Baltoro 75 offers almost identical features but with a smaller weight capacity.
