The Steinberg UR22 vs. The Focusrite Scarlett 2i2
The Steinberg UR22 and Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 USB Audio interfaces have some interesting features of their own. While FocusRite is more established than Steinberg as a brand, these two devices actually provide almost services. Both of them come in metal housing, includes several Mic Preamps and have their own user interfaces.
Basic Features
The Scarlett 2i2 features 2 award-winning preamps of Focusrite. Being housed in a beautiful anodized unibody case, the interface has some great looks. On the other hand, the Steinberg UR22 comes with its special 24-bit/192kHz converters. The MIDI and audio interface is fitted into a solid metal housing, providing purest sound at any place. This device is perfect for everyone from mobile musicians to touring DJs.
Connection and Monitoring
Both the models have front-faced input panels for connecting line and instruments along with microphones. As a result, it is possible to record like a stage piano or the output from a synthesizer with these devices. By flicking a switch, you can provide output to an acoustic or electric guitar. The Scarlett 2i2 has halo indicators, which indicate whether the signal level is perfect or nor for recording. While red indicates that you have to reduce the gain, a green light means you are good to go.
On the UR22, you can control the device through the volume knob, the DIM, Mono, Mute monitor controls. The built-in dspMixFx technology will provide you latency-free, DSP-powered monitoring with various effects. On the other hand, the large monitor dial of the Scarlett 2i2 controls the speaker volume. The high quality headphone output on the front panel delivers clean and loud sounds to the listener. You can monitor the incoming with zero latency.
Mic Preamps and Performance
There are 2 HQ award-winning Focusrite mics in the Scarlett 2i2. From its long experience with analog equipment, the company knows how to build some of the industry-leading mics for its clients. The mics are identical to those found in Liquid Saffire 56 and Saffire PRO 40. The UR22 features 2 D-PRE mic preamps, which are very popular too. The class-leading 192kHz converters of this device provide some excellent sound.
Both these devices support 24 bit resolution at up to 96 KHz. What’s more, the Scarlett 2i2 is also tested with Mac OSX 10.7, and it works perfectly with the latest version of Mac. Which means you can use the device with your recently purchased Mac.
Final Words
While both of these devices provide excellent performance, you still have to choose one of them, unless you are buying one of each. When it comes to such a situation, you may want to go for the trusted one, i.e. the Focusrite Scarlett 2i2. Along with being a bit cheaper, this interface has an attractive and portable design.
