Our comparison headsets were the Logitech g230 and Logitech g430 Gaming Headsets. While both headsets offer a superior gaming experience, they each have unique features that have to be weighed against your personal preferences/needs when choosing to buy.
The basics
We’ll start with the basics. Both headsets offer 40mm speakers with Neodymium magnets, providing superior sound quality. Both have a padded, adjustable headband with breathable performance-sport cloth designed to help reduce moisture buildup during play, and padded soft-cloth ear cups for maximum comfort during marathon gaming session. Ear cups on both units swivel flat to protect the unit when it is not in use.
Technical features
The microphones in these two headsets are virtually identical, with frequency responses of 50-20,000 kHz and unidirectional pickup patterns.
The g430 has both analog 3.5mm jack and full-digital USB connectivity, allowing for crisp, no-lag audio, while the g230 only comes with analog 3.5mm jacks. Both headsets come with an extra long cord, allowing for maximum access to game controls.
Sound quality
Sound quality enhances and defines the gaming experience. Interactive sound allows you to hear minute details, such as the pop of a gun, that influence gaming decisions. You can’t win the game if you can’t hear the shot that was fired behind you. For serious gamers, sound quality should be the number one priority in a headset.
Both headsets have 40mm speakers with Neodymium magnets, providing superior sound quality. Both of our test headsets offer wicked speaker frequency response at 20Hz – 20kHz, >120dB SPL @ 1kHz, giving you the highest highs and lowest lows.
Which one?
Both headsets present a good case, and this reviewer felt that overall when choosing between the g230 and the g430, it really is a toss-up. Both low-priced headsets offer a quality product a few “extras” that take them one step beyond the competition. Features like Dolby 7.1 Surround Sound and a corded USB connection add depth to the g430 gaming experience.
Other key features include:
- Noise canceling microphones
- On-cable volume and mute controls
- Rugged construction
- Breathable performance cloth covers for maximum comfort
Pros and Cons
Reviewers for both headsets noted their excellent sound quality and comfort. Complaints included overly sensitive microphones that pick up ambient noise and make it difficult to hear game sounds, sound that doesn’t get quite loud enough, lack of sound insulation from the ear cups and headband that starts to hurt after a few hours of wear. Reviewers also note that the ear cups do tend to make your ears overly hot if worn for long periods of time.
Price comparison
The final comparison between the two headsets is price. The g230 is quite a bit less expensive than the g430, although most reviewers noted that the main difference between the two units is the USB to 3.5mm sound card that is included with the g430. Other than that, both units are essentially the same.
