Voice recorders are a handy thing to have. When interviewing someone, you need to have a way to record his or her exact words to use for your article.
Even if you’re not an aspiring journalist, they still can come in handy, whether it’s to build a case against someone or even if you decide to go ghost hunting with your friends this Halloween.
And let’s face it, your smartphone’s mic doesn’t cut it at times. It’s good to have a device that’s primarily meant for recording, and you need to have a quality one.
That’s why we’re here to help! We’re comparing the Tascam DR-40 and the Zoom H2n to see which is the better value. Let’s look.
The Price
As of this article, a new DR-40 goes for about $145 on its Amazon page, while the H2n goes for about $160. The price difference isn’t too big, but is the H2n’s extra money warranted?
Storage
A good voice recorder has to have plenty of storage. You don’t want to have to empty your recorder constantly just so your storage isn’t full when you need it the most.
As it turns out, both have the same amount of storage. You can use memory cards up to 32 GB for storage, and each recorder comes with a 2GB card.
Battery Life
You don’t want your recorder to die just when you need to record the most important sentence a speaker has said.
Both units last a long time, but there is a difference. The DR-40 requires three AA batteries and can be charged via USB. It’s battery life is 15 hours.
Meanwhile, the H2n has USB support as well, and has 20 hours of battery life. To top it all off, you only need two AAs to charge it.
The H2n is the clear winner.
Other Features
Both recorders have the standard features you’ve come to expect. You can record in different file formats, play back your recordings, and transfer them to your PC when you’re done.
There are a few differences, however. The DR-40 allows you to record over files, while the H2n has more ways of recording.
It all depends on what you prefer. Personally, we think the H2n having more variety in recordings is more important, since you need to have more options depending on how crucial the sound quality should be.
Which is Better?
Both recorders are great for their price, but the H2n is the better value.

It’s slightly more expensive, but it’ll be paying for itself in battery life, with five more hours than the DR-40 and one fewer batter required.
Plus, there are more options for sound quality, perhaps the most important feature a recording can have.
As a side note, it also has a cool design, looking like a small mic, but that’s just our preference.
Anyway, we hope this article allowed you to make a more informed decision. Until next time!
