Choosing a projector is hard, even if you’re brand loyal. Brands typically have dozens of different models, and it can be hard to pick just one.
Take Optoma, a trusted name in quality projectors. They have so many models to choose from, and it can be tough making an informed decision, especially when the reviews are both positive.
This is why we’re here to tell you which one will give you more for your money. In this article, we’ll compare Optoma’s HD26 model and put it up against its GT1080.
Which is better? We’re about to find out.
The Price
Both models are in the $500-1,000 price range. While they’re not movie-theater quality projectors, they pack a punch for those who have a budget.
The HD26 model, from its official retailer on Amazon, will cost you about $649. Meanwhile, the GT1080 costs $699.
So they’re about the same considering the price range. Fifty bucks isn’t too much of a difference, but that extra 50, if the HD26 is better, can be used to buy a cool game or a few movies.
The Picture
Quality-wise, you bet that both have 1080p HD, 3D support, and a 25,000:1 contrast ratio. These are staples in projectors for this price range, so you’re to expect this by now. However, the GT1080 also has 400 more lumens, ideal if you want your picture to be brighter.
The small difference makes the GT1080 better in picture. But what about the other features?
Other Features
Like most models, the projectors do have their own built-in speakers. As usual, you’re not going to get that good of a sound quality from them, and should instead invest in external speakers. Internal speakers should only be considered if your external speakers break.
The GT1080, being a projector marketed towards gamers, has Gaming Mode as well. While you can play video games on the HD26, the GT1080 allows for a better response time and less lag.
If you’re a gamer, you should know that’s important. The slightest bit of lag can cost you your victory, after all.
Other than that, they have the basic features of any projector. They’re eco-friendly, have lamps that will last you for years, and come with decent enough warranty.
But the GT1080 wins this one, as it’s friendlier towards gamers while still giving you the movie experience.
Which is Better?
Even if you don’t play too many games, we have to go with the GT1080 as the better value. The fact that it’s less laggy is good even for moviegoers, and it’s brighter. Plus, the price difference isn’t too much. Well worth the extra $50.

That isn’t to say that the HD26 is not good. It still packs a punch, and if you can’t find the HD26, or are a non-gamer who really needs the money for something else, you can go with that and not lose that much.
We hope this comparison helped you make an informed decision. Happy shopping!
