We’ve had a lot of requests and feedback on this one… The Bosch GLM 50 is hands down the best unit when it comes to these two laser measuring devices although some may disagree! Keep reading to find out why we think that the GLM50 is the clear winner.
Laser distance measuring devices have become a staple in many toolboxes, replacing standard tape measures because they offer precise accuracy, fewer steps, quicker results and a memory function to store measurements for later review. These basic technological upgrades are a significant improvement that building/design contractors, DIYers and photographers are quickly deciding they can’t live without.
Bosch has been at the forefront of developing this state-of-the-art tool, so it makes sense to take a side by side look at two similar devices that they offer. Comparing the Bosch DLR 130k vs Bosch GLM 50 is a great way to determine which features are more important, what has been improved or downgraded and what the company (and presumably customers) have decided bring additional value to the device.

Comparing the Bosch DLR 130K and the Bosch GLM 50
Since we are comparing two similar models of laser measuring devices from the same manufacturer, it is important to note that the Bosch DLR 130K is the older of the two. As such, it is no surprise that each device has the same basic platforms when it comes to features and capabilities. This also means, of course, that the Bosch GLM 50 can be expected to have improved performance features.
In fact, when it comes to factors like performance and price, both the DLR 130K and the GLM 50 are fairly close. Currently, there is about $20.00 difference in price, with the Bosch GLM 50 costing slightly more than its predecessor. And while they both measure accurately within 1/16th of an inch and share the same 2” measuring distance on the low end of the range, the DLR 130K comes up short by about 35′ in comparison to the GLM 50.
There are, however, certain aspects – mainly in the product’s quality of construction – that are preferable in the original model. Let’s take a look at quality and performance comparisons.
Quality of Construction
Since these were manufactured by the same company, the actual quality of each device’s construction is comparable. The Bosch DLR 130K boasts being the world’s smallest rangefinder when it first came out, and while the Bosch GLM 50 is technically lighter and smaller volume-wise, DLR 130K is more compact. This older Bosch needs more batteries (4 AAAs) so is slightly heavier, but it also has more heft.
It simply feels more substantial. While that might seem unimportant, this is a hand-held device – how it feels in your hand is certainly a consideration. The GLM 50 is narrower and lighter but has a cheaper, more flimsy feel. You might get that “they don’t make them like they used to” feeling with the GLM 50, especially if you have been using the DLR 130K.
Performance
Looking at the Bosch DLR 130K vs Bosch GLM 50, the real contest is how they perform against each other. The fact is, there isn’t much to like about the older DLR 130K over the GLM 50. Sure, the price is slightly lower and the fact that it has the shape and feel of a larger tape measure seems to be comforting on some level, but these seem inconsequential when the performance is compared.
The GLM 50 measures a greater distance by 35′. It is also backlit, unlike the DLR 130K, and offers a third reference point in the center, for optional use with a tripod (not included). Another major factor in the GLM 50s favor is that it will store 3 lines of measurements, while the DLR 130K only stores one measurement at a time, which can be a real drawback when you’re on the job.
Though they both feature length, area, volume and continuous length measurement modes, The Bosch GLM 50 also offers an indirect length measuring mode, which adds to its versatility.
Overall Decision
In Bosch DLR 130K vs. Bosch GLM 50, the clear leader is the GLM 50. This newer model offers substantially better features and performance capacity than its predecessor when it comes to measuring distance, memory storage and the extra features that make any job a little more simple.
