Buying a projector for your home that’s under a grand isn’t too difficult. There’s a projector for any budget, after all. But if you’re looking for quality, you’ll need a home projector that’s a bit higher in price.
Even if you up your budget, there are still many projectors to pick from. With such a big investment, you want one that will make the money you spent worth it in the end. And today, we have two high-end projectors that are both well-received.
First, we have the PT-AE8000U by Panasonic, and we’re pitting it up against the VPL-HW40ES by Sony. Which is better? Let’s find out.
The Price
To find out the value of a product, we must first look at the pricing. As we mentioned before, both projectors are for people with more budget, so don’t expect anything cheap. We also look at how much the first-party seller on Amazon is selling them for.
Panasonic’s projector, as of this article, is selling for about $1769. Meanwhile, Sony’s is going for $2498.
That’s quite a noticeable price difference. But more expensive does not necessarily mean a better product. Which projector looks better?
The Picture
For the price, you better believe that both projectors deliver 1080p HD and also support 3D movies and games. We need to look at the projectors’ lumen count and contrast ratio if we want to make a decision.
Brightness-wise, Panasonic’s product has about 2,400 lumens, which isn’t too impressive for a projector of this price. Sony’s meanwhile, has about 1,700. Both are acceptable brightness, but there should be more for the cost.
So let’s look at the meat of picture quality, the contrast ratio. Panasonic’s projector has a ratio of about 500,000:1, which is quite powerful.
Sony’s contrast ratio is not available on their Amazon page, and we had to research to find it. The ratio is an underwhelming 120,000:1.
In both fronts, Panasonic’s projector blows the more expensive Sony’s out of water.
Other Features
Both projectors have your standard extra features, such as an internal speaker. If you’re looking for good sound quality, however, the internal speakers are usually tinny, even on more expensive models.
Sony’s projector does boast a few bells and whistles, such as an extra quiet fan, which is important if the noise from a projector ultimately bothers you. Other than that, neither have anything special.
Which is Better?
Panasonic’s projector is the easy victor here. While Sony does have quality projectors, its radically inferior contrast ratio is a bit unnerving, especially since it’s about $700 more expensive. We found no reason why the price tag is warranted when compared to Panasonic’s model.

With that extra money, you could easily buy some quality speakers for the full experience, and you could even purchase a gaming console if you’re a gamer, along with a few games.
So overall, we gotta go with Panasonic. We hope this article helped you in your quest for a home projector.
