DeLonghi’s EC702 and EC155 cappuccino/espresso makers represent opposite ends of the DeLonghi spectrum: a high-end, hulking, extremely variable machine (the EC702) and an affordable, compact, simple-featured machine (the EC155).
The EC702 is obviously the “better” espresso machine, but looking at the huge price difference, the final decision comes down to the idea of value and what features you need. Look at what each machine has in the sections below, and consider how much you need each feature—that’s the best way to determine which is better for you.
Form and Appearance
The EC702 looks more professional than the EC155, with a stainless steel body compared to the less expensive model’s plastic. The EC702 also has polished steel buttons on the left side for control, while the EC155 is controlled by a large plastic knob in the center.
While the plastic of the EC155 may make it slightly less attractive and durable, it is much more suited to use in multiple locations than the EC702. Standing at less than a foot tall and 9.5 by 7.5 inches around for a weight of 6.7 pounds, it’s much easier to move around than the 11 pound EC702 that’s 11 by 8 by 12.5 inches—but the light weight may sacrifice some work surface stability..
Brewing Features
Both espresso makers feature portable filters and frothers, which are a feature that other devices in the price range lack. In addition, both are self-priming, use a 15 bar pump pressure, and can brew both espresso and cappuccino.
The EC702’s brewing features are generally upgraded versions of the EC155’s, and also incorporate a few features that the EC155 lack like easier temperature/pressure control, a faster boiler, and cleaner design.
Other Features
Both of DeLonghi’s machines use a double thermostat for advanced control and large water tank, though the EC702’s is 44 ounces while the EC155 holds 35 ounces. In addition, the EC702 boasts the addition of a removable drip tray and cup warmer for easier cappuccino preparation, which are very useful if you intend on using the machine for some more complex cappuccino creations.
Flavor
The actual brewing system of the two cappuccino/espresso makers is very similar, but the higher quality of the parts in the EC702 give its brews a slight edge of consistency over the EC155. However, the difference between the two would only be discernible to a true veteran espresso or cappuccino consumer—if this is your first purchase of one of these machines, you probably won’t notice the difference between them for some time.
Conclusion
Both the DeLonghi EC702 and EC155 are excellently priced and perfectly functional espresso and cappuccino makers. However, unless you plan on making frequent use of the most advanced features in the EC702, we can’t recommend it over the EC155.

The EC702 is a fantastic brewer, but the extraordinary value of the EC155 at only $99 gives it the advantage over its competitor, priced at twice that. The EC702 is ideal for a kitchen in need of a high-end, high-functioning espresso/cappuccino brewer—if you fit that criteria, don’t hesitate to buy it.
