Both of these new espresso machines from Nespresso feature the recent capsule-based technology, which has eclipsed traditional brewing methods for daily coffee. Both of these machines boast capsule espresso makers’ appeals like single servings, quick boiling, and speedy preparation.
Both devices offer similar features to the competing series of home espresso capsule brewers, and don’t differ much from each other in terms of functionality. We think that the Inissia is the better choice here: the Essenza provides easier access to some of the deeper corners of Nespresso’s recipe list, but in the end that can’t defend its increased price.
Brewing Features
The Nespresso Essenza offers a few slight advantages over the Inissia, but the two remain very closely matched. The Essenza has a larger water tank (0.9 liters compared to the Inissia’s 0.7) as well as a larger used capsule container (14 capsules, the Inissia can hold 11), but apart from that the two machines remain largely the same in functionality.
Both espresso makers offer a removable water tank, a 19 Bar high pressure pump, and a drip tray, as well as compatibility with all of Nespresso’s capsules. In addition, they both have powerful heating elements that will ensure a shorter wait time.
Ease of Use
The Inissia is smaller and lighter than the Essenza, and this dimension advantage in addition to its handle-style pump make it ideal if you intend to use it outside of your home. The biggest advantage that the Inissia has over the Essenza is its automatic volume control, meaning that you don’t need to keep pressing the brew button until your coffee cup is as full as you’d like it.
Apart from that main difference, the two espresso makers don’t vary significantly in how simple they are to use. As capsule makers, there’s not many ways to complicate the process, which both machines do a good job of keeping simple.
Recipe Brewing
If you intend to use some of Nespresso’s recipes that require smaller, varying amounts of espresso or advanced preparation, the Essenza is the better choice thanks to its manual brewing. While these can be made with the Inissia, it’s much easier using the Essenza because you can choose from more than the predetermined sizes.
Quality of Coffee
Given that both the Inissia and Essenza are both made by Nespresso, the quality of the coffee produced by them should be identical. Both use the standard Nespresso capsules, which can be drank on their own or as part of Nespresso’s deeper recipes.
Conclusion
Not a lot separates these two espresso makers, given their shared manufacturer and that they both brew from capsules. The biggest difference in functionality is the automatic brewing of the Inissia and the manual system of the Essenza.

Unless you plan on using Nespresso’s more advanced “Ultimate Coffee Creations” the Inissia is the clear choice here. Its lower price, smaller size, and automatic brewing make it much more accessible than the Essenza, which is more geared towards the more advanced espresso drinker.
