Nespresso’s new VertuoLine system is advertised as revolutionizing the world of coffee, and its price certainly suggests that. Likely its biggest obstacle in this is Nespresso’s own Inissia model, which is the brand’s peak in simple, automatic capsule brewing.
The VertuoLine machine differs significantly from all of Nespresso’s earlier machines, boasting a number of special features not offered by the original line. Ultimately, the VertuoLine is the best choice for you if you want as close to boutique coffee shop quality—if you’re fine with the classic homebrew with Nespresso’s classic favored twist, you’ll be much more suited to the Inissia.
Form and Appearance
While the Inissia is about an inch longer than the VertuoLine, its other two dimensions are much smaller as well as weighing as much as half of the VertuoLine, making it the ideal choice if you intend to move your espresso maker from place to place. Both machines come in a wide variety of colors and a fashionable, modern design, so size and mobility is the chief divider in this area.
Brewing Features
The VertuoLine brings some of the most advanced capsule brewing techniques currently available to your kitchen. Its most prominent feature is the capsule recognition, minimizing any setting adjustment you may have to do by reading a barcode on each capsule.
The VertuoLine also offers Centrifusion (rotating the capsule quickly to get all of the flavor out), a faster pre-heat time, and redesigned capsules. Nespresso says that the VertuoLine is their first machine that delivers espresso as well as brewed coffee, so if you’re looking for both drinks, this is the choice over the Inissia.
Other Features
Both the VertuoLine and Inissia offer Nespresso’s usual range of convenience features. The VertuoLine has these features in either faster or larger use, but that doesn’t mean the Inissia lacks these features—while smaller, they still function perfectly.
The VertuoLine heats up faster (20 vs 25 seconds), can hold more used capsules (14 vs 11 capsules), and has a larger water tank (40 oz v 23.7 oz) than the Inissia. Both have a drip tray, automatic brewing, and 9 minute automated shut-off, but only on the VertuoLine can you manually adjust the amount of coffee you want.
Flavor
Both machines use Nespresso’s capsules, but the VertuoLine and OriginalLine (containing the Inissia) use different capsules. While it’s generally accepted that the coffee and espresso from the VertuoLine tastes better, it’s still unclear as to whether it’s because of differences in the capsules or the advanced brewing of the VertuoLine.
Conclusion
Both Nespresso machines offer fine espresso for your home, and it’s not surprising that the VertuoLine is much more full-featured than its smaller OriginalLine partner the Inissia. If you are sure that you want both espresso as well as classic brewed coffee from one machine than the VertuoLine is for you.

However, if you only want espresso, it’s hard to argue with the Inissia’s price. While the VertuoLine boasts the most advanced features available, we thought it wasn’t worth the $70 price jump if you’ll only rarely use the brewed coffee feature.
