Never has the world of home projectors been easier. Used to, you would have to cough up a few grand if you wanted one that was halfway decent. But now, you can get one for under $1,000, and sometimes under $500.
But which one should you pick? There are dozens of name brands with hundreds of models. You may find yourself getting lost in the specs and jargon, but we’re here to help you find the exit.
Today, we’re comparing two models by two different brands. First, we have the H5380BD by Acer, and the HD141X by Optoma. Which is the better value? Let’s find out.
The Price
When choosing a projector, it should be comfortable in your allowed budget. And both of these are projectors for those who don’t have much to splurge.
On its Amazon page, from its official retailer, Acer’s model costs about $489, and Optoma’s goes for $573. Note that these prices are as of this article. They could have increased or decreased since then.
Overall, the price difference isn’t too big, and not even a hundred. So let’s compare the most important feature, the picture quality.
Picture
As with all models in this price range, both projectors will give you the HD experience, and have 3D support. However, Acer only goes to 720p.
Lumen-wise, the Acer has 3,000, which is quite good considering the price. Optoma’s is the same, so let’s look at one of the most important parts of the picture, the contrast ratio.
Acer’s model has a ratio of 17,000:1, which is impressive. Meanwhile, the contrast ratio of Optoma is just a bit better at 20,000:1.
Other Features
There isn’t too much of a difference so far, so let’s look at the additional features of each projector. Both include eco-friendly options so that they use less power when idle.
Also, both include a built-in speaker. If you’ve been reading the comparisons, you should know that these aren’t really worth it, and you should buy some external speakers, using the internal ones in case of an emergency, such as forgetting to bring your speakers while on your vacation.
The Acer model does claim to have a dust shield, which can lessen how many times to clean it. Optoma’s doesn’t mention anything about dust protection.
Which is Better?
Both are quality projectors that are great for the price. However, we got to go with Optoma’s model. The dust shield Acer offers is tempting, but both projectors need regular cleaning, anyway.

Optoma has that extra contrast ratio, which means a sharper picture. Isn’t that the most important part of a projector? And it’s not too much compared to the Acer model, so that’s a plus.
If you don’t have the budget, or if you cannot find the Optoma model, Acer is still a good purchase. But other than that, we’d choose Optoma HD141X any day.
Hopefully, this made your decision in picking a speaker a bit easier. Anyway, good luck, and happy shopping.
