Osprey Atmos 50
The Atmos series is ideal for overnight or extended trips. Known as the series that “redefined expectations about weight, ventilation and comfort in backpacking”, Atmos backpacks feature a customized fit, fully adjustable torso-length, interchangeable harnesses and an adjustable hip belt. Weighing in at just over three pounds (the largest of the three sizes is 3 lbs., 4 oz.), trekkers can carry all of their essentials comfortably and safely.
Features:
A torso-adjustable interchangeable shoulder harness for an exceptionally fine-tuned fit, patented AirSpeed suspension for optimized balance, ventilation and support, and an exclusive hip belt design featuring a six-inch adjustment range for maximum comfort. In addition, all Atmos series packs are hydration compatible, feature dual ice-tool loops and bungee tool tie-offs for gear storage.
Pros:
Traditional top-load design, front pockets with water-resistant zippers, lightweight construction and fully adjustable harness straps for support, comfort and function.
Cons:
Curvature of the back panel makes stowing gear awkward.
Gregory Baltoro 75
Gregory Mountain Products was founded in 1977 in San Diego, California. They have been a leader in innovation and design from the beginning, and today Gregory packs are preferred by serious outdoorsmen the world over.
Features:
The Baltoro 75 features a patented rotating waist-belt system that mirrors your body’s movements, a sleeping bag compartment for easy storage, a reservoir sleeve (reservoir sold separately) with dual drink-tube exit ports for hydration, 8+ internal pockets and 3 access points for easy entry at the top, front and bottom of the pack.
The Baltoro also features a thermo-molded EVA back panel with lumbar pad which helps keep the pack properly positioned during use, avoiding fatigue and injury, as well as dual hip-belt pockets, a hideaway drink bottle pocket and a removable top pocket that converts to a convenient fanny pack or sling bag.
Pros:
Constructed of 210-denier double-diamond rip stop and 210- and 420-denier flat-weave fabrics for maximum durability. Available in three sizes (73, 75 and 78 liters). Multiple pockets for storage, ergonomic design and rotating waist-belt system that automatically registers and readjusts to your hip-angle during use.
Cons:
Lack of interior organization compartments means gear can shift during use and require readjusting.
Conclusion:
Since both of our test packs have years of experience behind their design and innovation, the choice of pack should be determined by how you plan to use it. The Baltoro 75 is a heavy-duty pack built for rugged backcountry usage. For the occasional or light trekker, the Atmos 50 is a well-built option that will provide maximum comfort and functionality, however for the more serious trekker the Baltoro 75 is the clear winner overall.
